Architectural visit to Merchant Taylors Almshouses, Brandham Road

The visit will be led by Adam Shafron, Director of V Fund, the scheme’s developers of the Merchant Taylors Almshouses, which is now renamed Alms Gate.

We will visit the grounds and a few different houses.

The development comprises the refurbishment of 34 of the existing almshouses and 5 new build properties within the estate, with different layouts and typologies between 1 and 3 bed dwellings. Some were created as an extension of the existing houses, with careful matching details and others as detached buildings.

Architects Feilden + Mawson have worked on the project to evolve and rejuvenate the especial Grade II Listed buildings for almost a decade. The aim was to protect and maintain the unique character of the historic Almshouses (completed in 1826), while carefully updating them for modern life. The Almshouses are arranged in a U Shape around a shared garden. “And it’s not just the buildings that are protected. The woodland is part of the London Biodiversity Action Plan Priority habitats and home to breeding birds.” Mature trees were retained and new planting added to create enhanced landscaped gardens.

Tickets £10, via Eventbrite.
