On Wednesday, 9th January John Causer, Society Member, who has led several popular walks will guide the group past the “Agincourt Board”, the “Park Gates Board” and the “Vanburgh Pits Board” on the North side of the Heath. (On the published leaflet nos. 4,5,6). The Story boards themselves are full of history, nature and illustrations of the past but John will be adding much more. Come and see who lived amongst us and what famous events have taken place here. There will be a coffee stop in Greenwich Park.
Please let the office know if you plan to join us, so we can send further details.
After the walk……..
John led a very interesting walk. We reviewed the Storyboards but also learnt so much more. The background to the Church of the Ascension on Dartmouth Row; the story behind the brave WWII pilot who is commemorated on Point Hill; Duke Humphrey; Charlie Pearce the Blackheath murder and Emily Davidson to name but a few. Did you know the Crown still owned a part of the Heath?
It was a cold morning but our coffee stop in Greenwich Park went a long way to reviving us and was a good opportunity for a chat. It was a very jolly morning. John plans to do a Walk on the South Side soon, do come and join us next time.
