Walking the Cator Estate with Neil Rhind

2014key-Open-House.jpg

As part of the London Open House weekend, Neil Rhind MBE FSA, President of the Blackheath Society will lead two walks round the Cator Estate.  Saturday, 22nd September and Sunday 23rd September from 11.00 am to 12.30pm.  He will be looking at the architecture; some good – some not so good. The walk will cover the Victorian periods through to 1930s suburban, plus post-war municipal and ultra modern.

Due to the bad weather, the Sunday walk was cancelled. It is to be repeated on Sunday 7th October. Contact the Society Office for further information.

After the walk …

It was a lovely sunny autumn morning, an excellent activity for such a day. Neil is very knowledgeable and showed us many interesting houses, many of which have sold off their gardens for infill. As we walked up Pond Road we imagined ourselves back in 1723 approaching the imposing Palladian mansion of Wricklemarsh at the top of the hill where St Michael’s church now stands. Neil also pointed out hidden treasures, a most amusing one being the architect boxed in by the planners.
