We work to maintain and improve local amenities for current and future enjoyment and manage an extensive archive on Blackheath’s past.

Neil Rhind Celebration

Blackheath Halls was full on July 10 when the Society and the Halls arranged a tribute evening in memory of our late President Neil Rhind, who had died exactly five months earlier.

Attendees included his family, his many friends and representatives of the local organisations that Neil joined during the 55 years that he worked tirelessly for Blackheath. Many more people would have come, but we were limited to the 160 who could be fitted into the upstairs Hearn room.

The speeches covered Neil’s efforts in saving the Halls from demolition, his many local publications about Blackheath history and buildings, and his work for the Society and the Blackheath Preservation Trust, which saved many of them.

Some of Neil’s favourite music by Anton Bruckner and Erich Korngold was played and the audience left to the sound of the RAF’s March Past. They adjourned to the downstairs bar, where many toasts were drunk to his memory and happy stories exchanged about the life of a wonderful local servant.

We are very excited to say that we have been working with Pam Schweitzer on restoring interviews which she carried out in the early 2000s with Blackheath residents and these have been added to the archive website. The interviews have been made into short films which we hope you will like.
